Hundreds Woefie-Wandel for the SPCA
Just over 400 people and 282 dogs of all shapes and sizes took to the streets of De Tijger; Parow; for the first Purina SPCA Woefie-Wandel on Saturday 13 February; generating a total of R89 150 for the Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) SPCA. Two and four-legged walkers started arriving at Hoërskool Tygerberg from 6:30am and were welcomed by Kfm radio presenter Charmaine Noy; SPCA staff and Hoërskool Tygerberg volunteers; who handed out Purina sponsored goodie bags which included pet food products and treats. Popular Afrikaans children’s character Lollos helped Charmaine get the walk started just before 8:45am; amidst a veritable cacophony of excitable barks and woofs from dogs of all shapes and sizes; accompanied by their owners - some of whom had come dressed in their favourite valentine’s themed outfits. The 3.5km route took walkers on a circular route around Hoërskool Tygerberg and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The dogs loved walking with other canine friends; whilst their owners enjoyed the scenic views of Table Mountain clearly visible from the leafy suburb of De Tijger. Regular water points were available every half a kilometer; and Coca-Cola offered much needed refreshments to walkers at the half way point. Traffic officials; volunteer veterinarians and a human first aid vehicle helped ensure there were no human or canine injuries along the route. “We are thrilled at the response to our first Woefie-Wandel and grateful to Purina for helping us make this fundraising event such a huge success. We’ve received many congratulatory messages from walkers who so enjoyed the event and look forward to making the 2011 Woefie-Wandel bigger and better” said CoGH SPCA event organiser Juan August. Money raised from the event will be used by the Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) SPCA to establish a satellite centre in the North-West suburbs of Cape Town. Currently the CoGH SPCA has one facility in Grassy Park. Click here to view more photo's from the Woefie-Wandel
