Staffed by three vets and a team of nurses and orderlies, the Animal Hospital
provides excellent medical treatment for sick and injured animals brought
to the SPCA by our Inspectorate or by owners who are unable to afford private
veterinary care.
Sadly, we are seeing an increase in the number of people qualifying for special SPCA hospital rates, as pet owners struggle to make ends meet. Often their animals are the only source of comfort in times of hardship. We rely on contributions from more fortunate owners to subsidise veterinary care for pets of poorer owners.
An important aspect of this work is pet sterilisation; if they haven't already been spayed or neutered, all dogs and cats that have been adopted are sterilised prior to being released to their new owners. Last year, our animal hospital sterilized 3 000 dogs and 1 300 cats, as well as a number of equines and livestock.
We run three on-site out-patient Clinics which handle daily consulting, mostly involving primary health care and the education of
pet owners. More than 8 000 animals were vaccinated against serious diseases including rabies, at our clinics last year.
